  1. ###################################################################################################################
  2. # THIS FILE WAS WRITTEN & FORMATTED IN NOTEPAD++ AND MAY LOOK FUCKED UP IF YOU'RE NOT USING THE SAME TEXT EDITOR! #
  3. ###################################################################################################################
  4. Description:
  5. This guide will teach you how to modify the text & icon for a custom bubble on a PlayStation Vita with OFW 3.36. This guide requires you to have already installed VHBL, and you will need to have PSPFiler installed as a homebrew. If you do not have VHBL & PSP Filer available, you will have to do that first.
  6. Things you're going to need:
  7. - PSP Filer Homebrew
  8. - A Hex Editor
  9. I recommend DF HexEditor, available here: http://www.del-net.com/frmDFHEXEditorE.html, as it is the one used by The_Z in his YouTube tutorial
  10. PBP Unpacker: http://dl.qj.net/psp/tools-utilities-on-pc/pbp-unpacker-v094.html
  11. PBP Unpacker (Mac): http://www.mediafire.com/download/x1a0m4joohlzqqm/UNpackPBPmac.zip
  12. Example PBOOT: http://www.mediafire.com/download/l8s0q7oil12xs0f/PBOOT-example.zip
  13. Setting up PSP Filer:
  14. Description:
  15. This small section will first teach you how to install PSP Filer after you have set up VHBL.
  16. The Process:
  17. Making your Custom Bubble:
  18. Description:
  19. This is the section that will teach you how to create the necessary files to modify your custom bubbles.
  20. The Process:
  21. 1. First, make sure you have all the things you'll need listed above. Have the Hex Editor installed, have PBP Unpacker installed (unlike Package Viewer which is standalone, PBP Unpacker is an installed program) and make sure you have the example PBOOT downloaded.
  22. 2. Create a folder. If you followed my text tutorial on 'building' VHBL for Patapon 2 on 3.36, you could create a new project folder next to the previous one. Mine for example looks like '336_VBLBuildVHBL' and for this tutorial I'm using '336_VHBLCustomBubbles'.
  23. 3. Inside this folder, I recommend having your PBOOT.PBP and a shortcut to your Hex Editor of choice and PBP Unpacker as well (though PBP Unpacker, should, if installed correctly automatically open when you attempt to open a PBP file).
  24. 4. Let's begin! Assuming you haven't renamed your Example PBOOT, double click 'PBOOT-example.PBP'. It should open up in PBP Unpacker. If it doesn't then open it with your shortcut and then open up your PBOOT.
  25. 5. Right click on PARAM.SFO and extract it to your project folder.
  26. 6. From there, click on the 'New' button in PBP Unpacker. Now you'll have to set ICON0 for your custom bubble. If you don't have a usable image, you'll need to get one from the Internet or design it yourself. /Most/ homebrews and ISOs should have one, though you may need to dig around for it. For the purposes of having a shorter length, I won't cover this.
  27. 7. Now you have to open your Hex Editor. With your Hex Editor, you have to open up your extracted PARAM.SFO.
  28. If you're using DF HexEditor, you'll likely need to turn on EDIT Mode by hitting F2 or going to 'Options' and checking it. You won't go anywhere without doing this.
  29. 8. First, you'll need to edit the ID in the PARAM.SFO. This can be found at 0x160 0001. You want to replace this ID with the ID of your base game. If you're trying to follow this guide for VHBL, it's the same ID you found in the last guide. (If you used PIYOTAMA like me, it's NPUG80413.) If you're using a cloned bubble, it NEEDS to still MATCH the original base game, not the folder ID of your cloned bubble.
  30. 9. Next you'll want to edit the Title of the game in both areas. Title 1 is at 0x170 0C0D. Starting at the character prior to 'K-ON' (before the K), type out your title that you want for your bubble. Next you need to delete the following characters in the title. Afterwards, you'll need to go into the Hexadecimal section and add 0's DIRECTLY after your title until the PARAM.SFO has a filesize of 652 bytes. In DF HexEditor, you can see the Filesize at the bottom.
  31. 10. Now, you need to edit the second title. This is located at 0x200 0809. Follow the same steps as Step 9.
  32. 11. Now you can save your edited PARAM.SFO. If you did this correctly, you should be able to open up your edited PARAM.SFO and under #7 'PBOOT_TITLE' you'll see your title followed by a bunch of '<#0>'s. This is fine, it will not show up on your Vita. You will see the same thing under #10 'TITLE'.
  33. 12. Next, you should drag the PARAM.SFO or select it in your previously open window from Step 6. Now you can save your new PBOOT as PBOOT.PBP. Now, go ahead and open your new PBOOT.PBP. If you've done everything correct up until this point, you should see your icon and if you double-click PARAM.SFO, you can verify that you have the correct file there, too.
  34. 13. Next, we have to move our customized PBOOT.PBP to the Vita. There are two ways to accomplish this.
  35. Vita FTP Method:
  36. Running this off of memory since I don't currently have Vita FTP installed on my Vita (not since 3.18.)
  37. Launch the Vita FTP homebrew from VHBL. Using your FTP client of choice (Filezilla, Windows Explorer, etc.), navigate to the IP address of your Vita. From here, you'll need to find the folder of your base game. Drag and drop or move your PBOOT.PBP to the folder of your base game (Make sure it's the one that ends with the '&', i.e. the original game's folder and not the folder your VHBL/homebrew.
  38. CMA Method:
  39. Move your PBOOT.PBP to your CMA folder location. You'll want to place it in one of your save datas. I myself downloaded a save file for the PSP game 'Naruto: Shippuden: Akatsuki Rising' (a game I'll never play), and changed the visible icon so I can recognize what the purpose of it is for. Regardless, drag your PBOOT.PBP into one of these folders.
  40. Then, using CMA, transfer the save data onto your Vita. From here, you'll have to launch VHBL and then PSP Filer. Using PSP Filer, navigate to your save data you copied over and move your PBOOT.PBP file over to your base game folder. Make SURE that you drop it into the file that ends with an '&'. So for Piyotama US users it needs to go into (PSPGameNPUG80413&).
  41. 14. Once you've moved your PBOOT.PBP file to the appropriate folder, you can close everything out, and then you'll have to rebuild your memory card database. I'll give you the same instructions I did from the previous guide, follow ONE of them:
  42. Process 1: After shutting down the Vita, turn it back on by PRESSING & HOLDING the Power button, the PS button, and the R button. This will bring you to a black screen, referred to as Recovery or Safe Mode. Using the D-PAD, navigate to 'Rebuild Database' and press X and let it work and boot you to the main menu.
  43. Process 2: After shutting down the Vita, eject your memory card and reboot the Vita normally. It will rebuild the database and start up properly. Then, shut it down again and re-insert your memory card and start it again and allow the Database to rebuild a second time.
  44. 15. Once you've followed Step 14, successfully - unlock your PS Vita, and you should find that your bubble has been changed successfully!
